My Real Success Story
Anna Maria Mendoza-Ramos
I am Anna Maria Mendoza-Ramos, 51 years old and from Marikina City.
I had been working as VA for one year and a half. I am a single parent since 2001, my husband died due to a heart attack. I had been working office based since 1993 and had experienced working in different industries.
I started working in business processing companies since 2004 and my last work was with a prestigious financial company where I spent my remaining call center years before I decided to resign.
I guess, working in different BPOs for too long will surely make you bored. That is what happened to me.
By May 2016, I decided to quit my job.
Honestly, my primary reason of resigning is because of my daughter who was a special child. I regret not spending quality time with her that much. I was preoccupied with work and the willingness to earn an income. After my resignation, I decided to start looking for home based jobs.
Honestly, I do not know where to begin.
I have not invested anything such as the tools which I wanted to use. I have no skills and not even one training. I just simply created my online profile in one particular job platform. I even joined groups for freelancers in order to get access to available jobs and free training courses.
And now comes my dilemma, after months of sending proposals, no employer hired me. I was feeling hopeless and thinking of going back to work in another BPO company instead.
By mid-August 2016, I started receiving part time data entry jobs. By October 2016, I got hired as part-time Virtual Assistant for two months. If my old laptop hadn’t crashed, I should still be working with the later. But honestly, I learned a lot from the job. It opened my eyes to the virtual world and served as a lesson to me. I should have invested on my own tools first before becoming a freelancer.
As of the moment, I am a freelancer data entry and research specialist for a market research company and doing fine as well. I was able to buy myself a new laptop, headset, and computer table.
On the other hand, I am still looking for other Virtual Assistant jobs. It is really difficult when you are the sole breadwinner of the family. When my colleagues or friends asked me for advice if interested to join the freelancing world, I always tell them these:
First, invest on the tools which you need to have.
Second, enhance your skills for there are free courses you can check on You Tube.
Third, when you are ready, create your profile in different job platforms and start sending proposals.
Just a reminder, the freelancing world is very competitive.
You should be ready to meet other freelancers which are more skilled than you. You should be ready to wait until you get the right job.
My story might not be a successful one, but I had learned a great deal from it. Secondly, I hope this would help others to think twice or thrice before resigning and engage themselves to the wonderful world of freelancing.
